Scientists have warned that air pollution may increase the risk of irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). It has been advised that people suffering from this disorder should stay indoors in case of air pollution or use a mask like N95 when going out.

The research was presented at the European Congress of Cardiology. The study was conducted on patients with irregular heart rhythms who had implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) implanted in their chests. Thanks to these devices, the experts not only noted the heartbeat of the patients but also provided them with possible medical assistance in case of emergency.

Dr. Alicia Zini of the Maguire Hospital in Bologna, Italy, says that patients with ventricular arrhythmias need to be aware of outdoor air pollution daily. If the air is full of dust, it is better to keep it confined to the house.

Dr. Alisia said that when the amount of PM 2.5 particles and PM 10 in the air increases to 35 and 50 micrograms per square meter respectively, it is important for patients with an irregular heartbeat to stay indoors. Otherwise, you must use an N95 quality mask when going out under extreme pressure.

According to the World Health Organization, air pollution kills 4.2 million people annually. It also increases the risk of mental disorders, blood pressure, and complications in pregnant women.

A total of 440 cases of cardiac arrhythmias were recorded in patients for up to two years. For treatment, 118 patients received an electrical shock while 322 patients were treated with anti-tachycardia pacing. When air pollution around the patients' homes was noted, it was found to increase the overall risk of developing irregular heartbeat by two and a half times.
