Increased risk of death from prostate cancer in obesity

A recent study found that obese men with excess belly fat are more likely to die from prostate cancer. According to research, the risk of dying from prostate cancer increases by 7% for every 4 inches of increase in belly fat.

Dr. Aurora Perez Cornago, a nutritionist and co-author of the study at the University of Oxford in England, said the findings encourage people to maintain a healthy weight, but being overweight is more likely to die from prostate cancer. Why it does, the reasons are yet to be fully understood.

He said it is possible that the misregulation of certain molecules in obese individuals increases this risk. In addition, delayed diagnosis of the disease in obese individuals compared to those of a healthy weight may also be a reason for increased risk.
