A balanced diet is very important for staying healthy and its regular consumption plays an important role in protecting you from many diseases including mental health.
According to a new study conducted in Chicago, people who eat green leafy vegetables, which contain flavonols, are protected from complaints of accelerated memory loss in old age.
Flavonols are compounds found in certain fruits and vegetables, including cabbage, tomatoes, apples, and oranges.
According to Dr. Thomas M. Holland, lead author of the study published in the Journal of Neurology of the American Academy of Neurology, eating more fruits and vegetables and drinking more tea are steps that can be an easy way to keep the brain healthy.
He said the study found that people who ate green leafy vegetables an average of seven times a week, or once a day, had a 32 percent lower rate of decline in mental performance.
Thomas Holland said that dietary and lifestyle changes early in life could potentially have beneficial effects. This is because of changes in the brain that begin 10 to 20 years before the symptoms of Alzheimer's appear.
However, he stressed that healthy behaviors, especially in terms of food and drink, are always rational.
He said that no moment is too early or too late to start making healthy lifestyle changes, especially when it comes to diet.
